Della Y (McCown) Leake

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Della Y. Leake, age 82, who passed away Tuesday, February 3, 2026, in Sarasota Memorial Hospital.  Born on March 17, 1943, at McAndrews, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Frona (Smith) McCown.  In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Ronald (Ron) Leake and her brother & sister-in-law Jimmy (Ada) McCown; nephew, Anderson “Andy” McCown.

Della worked for many years as a civilian contractor and employee for the United States Intelligence Services as well as years in service with Sarasota County Fleet Maintenance.

For many years she was involved in service to the Lord through children’s ministries and singing, with her husband Ron Leake, up until his passing in April of 2010.

Della was still a regular attendee of Sarasota Baptist Church in Port Charlotte, Florida, up until the time that she was no longer able to drive.  She did however continue to join the Sunday services via live stream.

She was absolutely dedicated to her family throughout every stage of her life.  Whether it be with her parents or her siblings, her children or her grandchildren she was ever present for all the moments in their life.

Survivors remaining to honor her memory include her two sons: Brian “Kelly” (Becky) Leake, Timothy “Timmy” (Dorina) Leake both of North Port, FL; sister, Janet McCown of McAndrews, KY; grandchildren:  Sean, Tegan, Sophie, Emma & Rachael Leake; nephews, Marshall (Brandi) West of Phelps, KY, and Danny (Susan) McCown of Powhatan, VA; sister-in-law, Donna Thompson of North Port, FL.  She is also survived by her friends & extended family. 

Her passing leaves a hole in so many hearts and lives.  She truly never knew how many people she touched the soul of.  Or how many that she guided to God’s salvation.  You will be missed. 

Celebration of life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, February 28th, 2026 at Creators Farm.  3025 Frederick Drive, Venice, Florida 34292
