Douglas Gene Tibbs, 73, resident of Matewan, W.V., passed away on February 1st, 2026, at the Pikeville Medical Center. He was born on July 8th, 1952, and he was the son of the late Denver & Meretta (Scott) Tibbs.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded by one brother, James Tibbs; a sister, Elmo DuBois; brothers-in-law, Donald Gregory, Joe Smith and Roger Smith who he loved as his very own brother; he was very dear to his heart.
Douglas was a roof bolter for 16 years in the mining industry. An avid outdoorsman, he loved fishing, hunting and swimming in the river. Douglas enjoyed bringing smiles to the faces of family and friends with his jokes and funny humor. He attended Faith Mission Church at McCarr, KY. Above all, Douglas was a devoted family man. His love for his family knew no bounds, especially when it came to his daughters. The memories they created together will be treasured forever.
Those surviving to honor the memory of Douglas include his daughters, Amanda Tibbs of Freeburn, KY, and Rhonda Tibbs (Clarence Gooslin) of Matewan, W.V.; one brother, Ronny (Gladys) Tibbs of Nicholasville, KY; three sisters, Joyce Gregory of Taylor, MI, Sharon Smith of Pikeville, KY, and Karen Smith of Phelps, KY.
Douglas was the proud Papaw to Zack (Megan) Francis, Morgan (Ronald) Prater, Dominick (Hailey) Francis, LaRanda Francis (Ashantee Agnew), Jadyn Kinder and Bryson Kinder, the great grandpa of Jaxon Prater, Finley Prater, Emberlynn Francis, Harmony Francis, Zynlee Francis, Kingston Agnew, and Adrian Agnew.
He leaves behind a host of extended family, friends, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to welcome friends for visitation at the Jones & West Funeral Home on Saturday, February 7th, 2026 from 12:00-1:00 P.M.
Funeral services will begin following visitation at 1:00 P.M. in the chapel with Pastor Jimmy Fields officiating.
